Sponsor boss explains backing

Sheffield Window Centre boss Ian Hunter has explained that his admiration for the work of the Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund is the reason his company has become involved in sponsoring the meeting for the first time.
He said "I believe in what the Ben Fund does very much, they were a big help to Ricky Ashworth and many others, I like the work that Paul puts into it and I think he's a bit of an unsung hero to be honest.

"I know how difficult it is to get sponsorship these days, and when I last spoke to sponsorship organiser Julie Reading they didn't have a sponsor for the meeting.

"It's not so much the advertising for the company, we're a local Sheffield company, so there is no commercial gain. But I really believe in everything the Ben Fund stands for and I know the difficulty that Paul has year on year in trying to put the whole thing together. I'm proud to be helping out with it."

Sheffield Window Centre have sponsored Sheffield Tigers and several riders over a long period though their association with Ricky Ashworth was particularly well known.

"He was a pleasure to work with all the time. I go back a lot further than that with other riders but I stuck with Ricky longer than any other rider. I think we are in our tenth year with Sheffield, it's my Testimonial year! Funnily enough I was talking today with the rider I think was the first we ever sponsored, Phil White."

Mr Hunter will be at the meeting behind the scenes with his son who has some special mementoes of the association with Ricky.

"I'll be there with my youngest son Joe who has been a fan for twenty years. Ricky used to bring him his race jacket every Christmas and Joe treasures these."
