After 11 months off the track due to injury, Sheffield and Plymouth rider Dan Gilkes will be back in the thick of action this week, first at Owlerton on Thursday then at King's Lynn where he has accepted the reserve's position for the Ben Fund Bonanza (Saturday, 5pm).
Some riders might be nervous after such a period out of action but Dan is very relaxed. "I'm really looking forward to it, I want to race as much as I can this year. I want to support the Ben Fund as and when I can because the support they gave me was just unbelievable. Doing this meeting was the least I could do.
"It helps them out but it helps me out as well. Hopefully someone gets a bit twitchy at the start and I can get a ride, but if not it's for a great cause and a great event and I am happy to be a part of it.
"I never really get too nervous before meetings, it's part of it and I enjoy it, it's what I love, all I've ever wanted to do was race speedway and I just embrace it and try to learn each time I'm riding and racing."
Dan suffered a broken arm, collapsed lung and five broken ribs when he crashed on 29th April last year at Scunthorpe. He has been training and practising since late last year but this week, it is the real thing.
