British racing legend Chris Morton is getting back on two wheels to raise vital cash for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund as he cycles from Manchester to Cardiff for the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain this Saturday.

The former FIM Speedway World Team Cup winner, who aims to raise £15,000, took his ceremonial first lap at Manchester's National Speedway Stadium on Monday night, accompanied by former Sheffield rider Ricky Ashworth, whose career was cruelly cut short by injury in 2013.

Over the past 10 years, the Ben Fund has gifted over £1 million to speedway riders from all nations in their time of need, and currently supports 10 former riders who are now wheelchair users in the UK.

Morton will cycle the 200-plus-mile journey from Manchester to Cardiff to raise funds for the charity, completing his trip with a special lap of the Principality Stadium track at 12pm on Saturday.

Morton is carrying out the ride in memory of Steve Casey and Ged Blake – both very close friends lost to cancer in 2023.

SRBF Chairman Paul Ackroyd said: "We are very excited to hear about Mort's incredible mission aimed at raising both funds and awareness for us with his four-day cycle from Manchester to Cardiff.

"Every year we are always blown away by the public's generosity towards the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund and we urge anyone who can to get behind Mighty Mort."
