Chris Morton and friends begin their 14 day bike ride between Cardiff and Wroclaw this Saturday, raising funds for the SRBF. And they will be joined towards the end of the ride by an amazing man who is one of the biggest names in Speedway history – Ove Fundin.
Ove is 91 but not so you'd know it. He has been slim and fit all his life, winning 5 speedway World titles along the way (1956, 1960, 1961, 1963 and 1967). He responded to Chris Morton's suggestion (which Chris admitted was half-joking) that he join the ride – and he said yes!
Ove said to Peter Oakes for Speedway Star: "I haven't been on a pushbike for years and years but I got back on one recently. The last time I did anything was when I was 70, when I rode from my home in France to my home in Sweden, about 1500 miles.
"I only did about 10 miles or something and if he still wants me to join for the last leg into Wroclaw, I will do it. I can do the last little bit; I wouldn't want to do more than a couple of hours cycling."
Also joining the team (Chris, John Curtis and Derek Richardson plus Ove) will be Marek Cieslak, former White City rider and successful Polish team manager.
